Total Lack of Compassion
I will say for the most part, everyone seems to be very helpful and caring and supportive of each other in this time of need after Hurricane Ike. Our neighbors developed a roof repair team of about five guys including my husband who have put tarps up on various roofs including our own in the neighborhood to protect the holes from more rain. Everyone has really come together to help each other out with generator use, tarps, repair help, food, cook outs and so forth. Now, when it comes to my workplace, it is a whole nother story.
So it all started on Thursday. My lovely workplace tells us that we are not to come to work on Friday, if we come we will be sent home, in order for everyone to prepare for the storm, BUT we are required to use PTO (paid time off - aka: vacation) to cover it. Now I emphasize that we are required to stay home by our employer and at the same time, required to use vacation time. Moving on, we are contacted on Sunday and told that Monday is to be treated as a regular work day unless we cannot make it in and in that case we have to use vacation time. !!!!!! So, when Mayor White is telling all of Houston to stay home and off the streets because it is unsafe, my employer is punishing us if we do not come in. Several of my coworkers, including myself have sustained damage to their homes, and some have had very serious damage. All other institutions in the Medical Center are closed until Wednesday but not mine! And, there is absolutely no compassion for those of us who have sustained damage. It is an absolutely incredible slap in the face in a time of need. It just astounds me. I had to get this off of my chest somehow and the only way I can see to complain to my employer is to call the ethics line. I am seriously considering doing this.
There are no words...I have seriously reconsidered my dedication level after what I have witnessed.
